The Best Gift to Have

By Catherine Ng

Introduction

Christmas is a time of celebration, joy, and giving. Families gather, lights shine brightly, and gifts are exchanged in love. Yet, amidst all the cheer, it's easy to overlook the greatest gift of all — a gift that surpasses every earthly treasure. This Christmas, let us reflect on The Best Gift to Have.

The Gift of Jesus Christ

Over 2,000 years ago, the world received the ultimate gift — Jesus Christ. Born in a humble manger, He came as a Savior for all. The Bible tells us in John 3:16 (KJV)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

This gift was freely given out of love. It wasn’t wrapped in fancy paper or placed under a tree; it was wrapped in humility and offered to all of humanity. Jesus came to bring hope, peace, and salvation — things no material gift can ever provide.

Why This Gift Matters

We live in a world where material possessions and temporary pleasures often take centre stage. Yet, no gift can fill the void in our hearts like the love of Christ.

The gift of forgiveness: Through Jesus, our sins are washed away, and we are made new (1 John 1:9).

The gift of eternal life: Unlike earthly treasures that fade, this gift lasts forever (Romans 6:23).

The gift of peace and joy: Even in trials, the presence of Christ brings a peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Receiving the Best Gift

Like any gift, the gift of Jesus must be received. It’s not something we earn; it’s a gift of grace. This Christmas, let us open our hearts and receive Him. In Revelation 3:20, Jesus says: "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me."

Giving the Gift to Others

Christmas is also a time to reflect the love of Jesus by sharing this gift with others. Just as God gave His Son for us, we are called to give — not just material gifts, but acts of love, kindness, and the message of hope.

In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus reminds us:

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden . . . Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

As a family, let’s commit to being that light this Christmas.

A Family Prayer

Let us close with a prayer of thanksgiving and commitment:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. As we celebrate Christmas, help us to remember the true reason for this season. Fill our hearts with gratitude for Your love and grace. May we receive this gift fully and share it with others. Bless our family, friends, and those in need this season. May our lives reflect Your light and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Conclusion

This Christmas, as we exchange gifts and create memories, let us remember The Best Gift to Have — Jesus Christ. He is the reason for the season, the source of our joy, and the hope of our salvation. May His love fill our hearts and homes this Christmas and always.

Merry Christmas to you all!
