We are 38 years old today!

"Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the name of the LORD; praise him, O ye servants of the LORD. Ye that stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God. Praise the LORD; for the LORD is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant"

Psalm 135: 1-3

The Lord is good to us in Grace B-P Church. He has given us 38 years of service in the eastern part of Singapore and to the regions beyond our shores. He has sustained this work by giving us good, dedicated and faithful members to serve Him. Although we are small in numbers, size is no matter to Him. He uses whomsoever He wills to His praise and glory. We are privileged to be His instruments.

A look back
Many people have been a part of our history. In the founding of Grace Church in 1976, we won't be here without the vision and mission of the late Rev Timothy Tow, whose sister, the late Dr Tow Siew Ai gave this building to be used as a church. The owner wanted cash for this building and it was told to my wife, Ser Kim by Mrs Peter Ng, the wife of Rev Peter Ng (Jesus Saved Mission), how she came with her sister, Dr Tow Siew Ai, carrying the cash to pay for this building. This building was later given to be used as a church.

Life BPC, with Rev Timothy Tow commissioned 30 Lifers, with Rev Patrick Tan to begin Grace BPC in the eastern part of Singapore in January 1976. I came to Grace Church (seconded by Galilee BPC to help out in this ministry) in December 1977, and I have been rooted here since then. This is the Lord's working. Nothing happened by chance.

In those days we were few in numbers. From 30, it became 50 and soon the Sanctuary could not contain the number of worshippers. Praise the Lord for using Grace Church to establish daughter churches, too. The Grace Mandarin in 1978, Shalom BPC in 1981 and Gethsemane BPC in 1989. In 2001, we did a major renovation when we had problem with the sitting capacity in the Sanctuary and the much needed space for the Bible class. As of 2013, we have been looking at carrying out another major renovation.

Rev Patrick Tan was the pastor of Grace Church in 1976 till 1981, when I was ordained by the B-P Church Presbytery in Life BPC and took over the pastorate. Thank God for the smooth transition of leadership and now it is my turn to hand over this work to another Pastor, God-willing, in 5 years time.

The way forward
A new generation of Gracians must come forward to serve the Lord in the Session as well as in the many ministries of our church.

The Session will be looking out for people who will be asked to consider being in the leadership, especially in the Session. This is one of the most difficult task in the church as most people are afraid to take on this role. They do not feel adequate for this job. Now who is adequate? If you think you can, you don't qualify. When others recognize your capability and spiritual qualifications, you should step out in faith. God-willing, we should have another 2 to 3, or even 4 more new Session members in 2016. Come and avail yourself to serve the Lord and together build Grace Church.
